A sergeant fires at a man after a shooting in West Nashville

During a domestic dispute, a sergeant shot at a man they believe shot two women but missed.

Jeffrey Carlson, 54, fired one round at Sgt. Michael Hunnicutt before collapsing. An MNPD spokesperson said Hunnicutt fired a reactionary round,

Carlson died at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. Aaron said both women suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

911 received a call reporting a shooting in the 5700 block of California Avenue, Carlson's ex-girlfriend's home. A 79-year-old woman was found in the front yard with multiple, critical gunshot wounds, police said.

Nearly half a mile away from Carlson's first victim, police found Carlson's ex-girlfriend giving medical aid to neighbors in the 1500 block of 52nd Avenue.

According to the woman, Carlson shot her as soon as she entered her home. She escaped the backdoor. Attempting to escape, the woman's mother was shot.

As well as trying to carjack a vehicle in the 5700 block of California Avenue, Carlson fled out the front door

There have been no previous reports of domestic violence between Carlson and the women, according to the MNPD.

All officers who fire their weapons, including Hunnicutt, will be placed on administrative assignment, Aaron said.

Carlson's death is being investigated by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation. An investigation will be conducted by the MNPD into the shooting of the two women.
